Leading scientists agree, whatever we do, significant climate change is now unavoidable. |
 |
It will take decades to bring emissions of greenhouse gases under sufficient control that the concentrations of the gases in the air stop rising.
And even then, lag times in key natural systems like the oceans will ensure than warming continues for some decades after that. Sea levels may continue rising for centuries. |
The world has no choice but to begin adapting to the inevitability of some climate change, while at the same time trying to head off worse to come. |
We face two challenges:
The creeping changes in average weather.
The changing risks of extreme weather.
|
|
|
 |
For many of us;
gradual changes to the weather do not matter much,
but changes in the most extreme events,
or the frequency with which extreme events occur,
can matter a great deal.
